How to Convert PNG to JPG Free (and JPG to PNG)

PNG screenshots are crisp but heavy; JPG photos are light but lossy. Converting between them is one of the most common little tasks online — usually to shrink a PNG for email or upload. Here's how to convert PNG to JPG (and back) for free, in your browser, with the transparency question handled properly and nothing uploaded.

1. The quickest way — convert PNG to JPG in your browser

  1. Open the Convert Image tool.
  2. Drop in your PNG file (or several).
  3. Choose JPG as the output format.
  4. Pick a background colour for any transparent areas, then convert.
  5. Download each JPG, or all of them as a ZIP.
It all happens on your device — your images are never uploaded.

2. The transparency catch — and the fix

This trips people up: JPG has no transparency. If you convert a PNG with a see-through background straight to JPG, those transparent pixels have to become something — and a naive converter often turns them black. The fix is to fill transparent areas with a chosen background colour (white is usual) before encoding. PDFNest does this automatically and lets you pick the colour, so logos and graphics come out on a clean white background instead of an ugly black one.

3. PNG or JPG: which should you use?

4. Converting the other way (JPG to PNG)

Going from JPG to PNG won't add quality back — JPG already discarded detail — but it's useful when you need a lossless copy to edit, or a format that supports transparency you'll add later. Same tool: drop in the JPG and choose PNG as the output.

5. Batch converting

Got a folder of PNGs? Add them all, pick JPG once, and convert the whole set in one go — then grab them individually or as a single ZIP. To make the files smaller as well as change format, follow up with Compress Image, or read our image compression guide.
